Dentists come in all shapes and sizes, but you want only the best for you and your family. How do you tell an average dentist from a good dentist from a great dentist, without making an appointment?
Many people have difficulty visiting the dentist. Perhaps they are nervous about the fillings or the work that may to be done or perhaps they cannot afford it. Some people are downright scared of some of the things that are done in a dentistry office and others think that they do not need the services of a dentist. However, with one American every hour dying of oral cancer and thousands of people with sore teeth and gums and yellowing teeth, the importance of a great dentist cannot be understated.
When you are looking for your own dentist, there are some easy things to consider first. Is the office clean and the staff friendly? Are you able to get in to talk to someone about setting up your appointment quickly? For that matter, was the person talking to you on the phone for the initial set up friendly? It is very easy to make a quick decision about whether or not to stick with a given dentist based on the staff and what the office looks like. It should a comfortable atmosphere, but still professional and you should feel as at ease as possible under the circumstances. And of course, it should be family based; you may not have children now, but it’s good to have everything set up ahead of time, just in case.
Once you’ve found a good office, then there are some details that make the best dentists stand out. You may want a mercury free dentist; one who doesn’t use mercury in their fillings, but instead uses materials that are easier on the body and more affordable as well. Some dentists have porcelain caps and give full on dental implants if you are missing teeth. And of course, the importance of teeth whitening cannot be understated, for even if you don’t need it now, it only takes one special occasion to make you glad you can do it! The more services you have access to, the better and it is the range of quality services that makes the great dentists stand out from the simply average ones.
Finally of course, trust your gut instincts. If something feels off about a dentist or his or her office, then likely there is something there that is making you uncomfortable. If you’re uncomfortable, then it will be a lot harder to get the work done or even make yourself go for routine cleanings. Always try to get to a dentist you can connect with early on, even if it takes some effort to do.
Do your research carefully before you commit to a dentist because it can be a real pain to switch dentists part way. It’s best to find your ideal dentist right away so you can skip all of the nonsense of bouncing around and get settled into a good routine of dental care aided by your dentist. Make sure that your dentist offers as many services as possible in a way that is comfortable for you and even see if they will call you to remind you for check ups! Whatever you decide on though, make sure that in the end you have a dentist you like and can deal with and who will do right by your teeth.
